Iko Chérie is the experimental pop project of French artist Marie Merlet, based in London. With a strong affinity for dub textures and analog noises, her music is characterized by woozy incantations, Casio drones, reverb-drenched guitars, and processed spoken word samples. Born and raised in Bordeaux, Marie developed a deep connection to music while studying film and electroacoustic composition at the conservatoire. She played in several bands and DJed weekly on the local radio station Nova Sauvagine. Her musical journey took a significant turn when she met Laetitia Sadier and joined Monade, leading to recording and touring experiences that solidified her commitment to music. After relocating to London, Marie continued her artistic exploration as Iko Chérie, while also playing guitar in the psychedelic cumbia outfit Malphino and being part of the HahaSounds Collective. She has collaborated with artists such as Yama Warashi and Gina Birch from The Raincoats. Additionally, Marie hosts a monthly residency on Soho Radio, where she highlights the contributions of women in music.
