In Sotto Voce was a musical duo consisting of Ilya Dimitrijevic, who provided vocals and guitar, and Boris Mikulic, who played keyboards and electronics. The two Yugoslavians met at the University of Ljubljana, where Ilya studied social sciences and Boris focused on computer sciences. Initially, they created music for theatre productions before founding In Sotto Voce after two years. Ilya later became a DJ at the "Draga Grad" new wave club, where he was exposed to various Belgian electronic influences. Their sound drew inspiration from Belgian acts such as Front 242, Men 2nd, The Neon Judgement, and Poésie Noire. However, it is revealed that Ilya Dimitrijevic and Boris Mikulic were actually Jo Casters and Herman Gillis of Poésie Noire, who initiated this secret side-project in response to a Belgian journalist's critique of their main band's sound as being too "poppy."
