The Incredible Bongo Band was a studio project created by record executive Michael Viner to produce theme music for the film "The Thing With Two Heads." Influenced by various artists, Viner utilized MGM studio downtime to record funk-influenced covers of popular hits with pick-up musicians. Although the band was not a true ensemble, a group of individuals was assembled for a publicity photo. Their most famous work is the percussion-centric cover of "Apache," originally a hit in 1960, which became one of the most sampled percussion breaks in hip hop and drum 'n' bass music. Additionally, the band recorded "Bongo Rock '73," a cover of the instrumental "Bongo Rock," which became a minor hit in the US, along with a cover of "Let There Be Drums," influenced by surf-style drum works.
