Ingrid Chavez is a Mexican-American poet and vocalist born in 1965 in Atlanta, GA, United States. She was a protégé from 1987 to 1991 and was married from 1992 to 2005. Chavez's debut album was initially intended to feature her spoken-word poetry set to atmospheric music by Prince. However, after Warner Brothers requested sung vocals, Prince abandoned the project, resulting in half of the album being as originally intended and the other half consisting of pop songs co-produced by Chavez and Prince's studio team. She also wrote the majority of Madonna's hit "Justify My Love" and received a significant out-of-court settlement for not being credited on the single's initial release. In later years, Chavez shifted her focus to parenthood and photography, while occasionally contributing vocals to various David Sylvian releases.
