Instant Funk was a soul group that emerged in the 1970s and 1980s, hailing from Trenton, New Jersey. The band was formed in the early 70s by Raymond Earl, Scotty Miller, and guitarist Kim Miller, originally under the name The Music Machine. Their manager, Jackie Ellis, renamed the band Instant Funk in 1971, inspired by their knack for quickly locking into a groove. The group gained recognition when they were discovered and subsequently became the backing band for a prominent artist before establishing themselves as a feature band. In 1976, they released their first independent album, "Get Down With the Philly Jump." The members of Instant Funk included Raymond Earl on bass, Scotty Miller on drums, Kim Miller on guitar, Dennis Richardson on keyboards, James Carmichael as the lead vocalist, and horns played by Larry Davis, Eric Huff, and Johnny Onderlinde. Other members included George Bell and Charles Williams on percussion.
