Intense Molecular Activity, also known as IMA, was a musical duo based in New York City, active from 1979 to 1982. The group consisted of Don Hunerberg, who played synthesizers, and Andy Blinx, who handled drums and percussion. Don was a studio sound engineer and musician, while Andy was an electronic clothing designer and a sound reinforcement engineer at notable downtown clubs such as Max's Kansas City, Mudd Club, and CBGB. During their time, IMA took advantage of off hours at Radio City Music Hall Studios, where they worked with various groups, including the Ramones, Richard Hell, Sonic Youth, Liquid Liquid, John Zorn, and Glenn Branca, to create their own music. Don's background in electronic music and Andy's in prog rock influenced their sound. They developed a unique method of producing songs using 2-track tape loops edited onto a 24-track recorder, similar to modern sequencer techniques. By 1980, IMA had refined their distinctive sound, blending elements of Post Punk and No-Wave with the early 1980s musical tools. Their studio, located above the proscenium of the Radio City Music Hall stage, was equipped with various orchestral instruments.
