Inti Illimani, meaning "Sun of Illimani" in Aymara, is a renowned Latin American folk music ensemble from Chile, formed in 1967 by university students including Pedro Yañez, Jorge Coulon, Max Berrú, Horacio Durán, Oscar Guzmán, Luis Cifuentes, and Ciro Retamal. The band gained significant popularity in Chile with their song "Venceremos," which became the anthem of Salvador Allende's Popular Unity government. During the Chilean coup on September 11, 1973, they were on tour in Europe and could not return to Chile, where their music was banned by the military junta. While in Europe, they evolved their sound by incorporating elements of European baroque and various traditional music forms into their Latin American rhythms, creating a unique fusion of modern world music. They are recognized as key figures in the nueva canción movement. In 2001, due to personal issues, the group split into two bands: Inti-Illimani Histórico, directed by Horacio Salinas, and Inti-Illimani Nuevo, featuring Jorge and Marcelo Coulón.
