Ironsides is a collective of Bay Area musicians known for blending classic psych-soul sounds with sweeping orchestral arrangements, reminiscent of cinematic soundtracks from 1960s European films. The group draws inspiration from the soundtracks and library music of European composers from the 60s and 70s, aiming to create lush songs that evoke a diverse range of feelings, emotions, and memories. The core of Ironsides consists of the Ramey brothers and Jamie Payne, who honor their Italian heritage, tracing their roots to Liguria, Italy, the birthplace of their maternal grandfather. The band's journey began with a focus on crafting music that evokes cinematic landscapes, with their first release, "The Raven" (2013), originally composed by Piero Piccioni, setting the tone for their elaborate sound. For their first full album in 2023, the band collaborated with a group of Bay Area musicians to perform arrangements by Lou King, a New York-based maestro. Many of these musicians have experience playing a variety of music, from jazz to classical, in clubs and orchestras. Max Ramey noted that the songs are inspired by landscapes, with each track capable of conveying different meanings to different listeners.
