Initially, he used the stage name Jay Dee, based on his initials, but adopted the name J Dilla in 2001. J Dilla's work significantly influenced his peers and played a defining role in the rise of the neo-soul sound from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2004 due to health issues, he toured with Madlib in Spring 2004. In 2003, J Dilla was diagnosed with TTP, a rare blood disease, and Lupus, which affected his immune system. His illness led to significant weight loss, and he publicly confirmed speculation about his health in 2004. Despite a reduced output of major releases
