Jack Peñate, born in 1985, is a singer/songwriter from Blackheath, South London, and the grandson of Mervyn Peake, the author of The Gormenghast Trilogy. He is often associated with the "Estuary English" movement in the UK music scene alongside artists like Lily Allen, Jamie T, Kate Nash, and Adele. This trend emerged in 2006/2007, featuring young musicians discovered on MySpace, known for their ska influences, everyday storytelling, and distinctive London accents. At the age of 17, Jack formed a band called Jack's Basement with his friend Felix White. The band eventually split, with one half creating The Maccabees and the other becoming Peñate's backing band, featuring Joel Porter on bass and Alex Robins on drums. Although he began studying Classics at UCL, he chose to pursue a music career, collaborating with the London indie club and label Young Turks. In autumn 2006, Peñate signed with XL Recordings, leading to mainstream success with his debut album, Matinée. His music showcases a diverse range of styles influenced by rockabilly, folk, jazz, and trip-hop, earning him the description of "the missing link between Jeff Buckley and Justin Timberlake."
