Jack Toombs was an American country and rockabilly songwriter, born on September 2, 1925, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA. He passed away on October 6, 2001, at the age of 76. Toombs moved to Nashville in 1937 and began his musical career on WHOP radio in Hopkinsonville, Kentucky, in the mid-forties. He started writing songs with McAlpin around 1950 and achieved his first musical success with the song "Almost," which he co-wrote in 1951. This song was recorded by George Morgan and entered the Hot 100 on April 25, 1952, reaching #2 and staying on the charts for 21 weeks. Although Toombs never achieved chart success as a singer, he became a staff writer in 1965, and his songs were recorded by notable country artists such as Jim Reeves, Roy Drusky, Ernest Tubb, and George Morgan, among others.
