Jackie Brenston was an American R&B singer and saxophonist, born on August 24, 1928, in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He is best known for his 1951 recording of "Rocket 88," which is often referred to as the 'first' Rock & Roll song. The track was recorded in Memphis by Brenston's band, with him singing the lead vocals and credited with authorship. Released by Chess Records in Chicago, "Rocket 88" reached #1 on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart, where it remained for over a month. Jackie Brenston passed away from a fatal heart attack on December 15, 1979, in Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 51.
