Jackie Mitoo was born on March 3, 1948, in Brown's Town, St. Ann, Jamaica, and passed away on December 16, 1990, at Wellesley Hospital in Toronto, Canada. He began his professional music career at the age of thirteen, playing with various bands, including The Rivals. During this time, he frequented Federal Studios, where he collaborated with some of Jamaica's top musicians, ultimately becoming part of the legendary Skatalites in June 1964. In 1959, he recorded at Federal Studios, where he caught the attention of producer Dodd, who invited Jackie to run sessions at his new studio on 13 Brentford Road in Kingston when it opened in 1963. Throughout the 1960s, Mittoo and Dodd recorded thousands of tracks together. After the Skatalites split, Dodd formed a new studio band under Mittoo's direction, with Alphonso handling horn arrangements while Jackie wrote the music. He led the session musicians, changing their name multiple times, and was instrumental in the creative process, providing bass lines, writing chord progressions for guitarists, playing keyboards, and arranging recordings. The artists recorded during this prolific period included many notable names and produced exceptional instrumental music that laid the groundwork for reggae, which continues to be covered and reinterpreted.
