Jackie Mittoo was born on March 3, 1948, in Brown's Town, St. Ann, Jamaica, and passed away on December 16, 1990, at Wellesley Hospital in Toronto, Canada. He began his professional music career at the age of thirteen, playing with various bands such as The Rivals. During this time, he frequented Federal Studios and collaborated with many of Jamaica's top musicians, eventually becoming part of the Skatalites in June 1964. In 1959, he met producer Coxsone Dodd at Federal Studios, who was so impressed with Jackie that he invited him to run sessions at his new studio at 13 Brentford Road in Kingston when it opened in 1963. Throughout the Sixties, Mittoo and Dodd recorded thousands of tunes together. After the Skatalites disbanded, Dodd formed a new studio band under Mittoo's direction, where he contributed by writing music, creating bass lines, and arranging recordings. Jackie Mittoo was instrumental in shaping reggae music, leading session musicians and producing a vast array of recordings featuring numerous artists. His work during this period is recognized as a foundational element of reggae and is celebrated for its artistic achievements. Mittoo died of cancer at the age of 42. He is remembered as "an ambassador of our music worldwide."
