Jackie Opel was a legendary ska vocalist, dancer, and bass player born in 1938 in Bridgetown, Barbados. He was discovered and moved to Jamaica in 1962, where he joined The Skatalites and recorded numerous solo tracks for various labels. A diverse vocalist, Jackie explored many styles, including ska, R&B, soul, gospel, and calypso. He is credited with inventing the musical style of spouge, which combines elements of ska, calypso, and traditional rock 'n' roll, as well as religious styles popular in the UK and US. Jackie eventually moved to Trinidad and later returned to Barbados, where he tragically died in a car crash in 1970 in his hometown of Bridgetown.
