Jackie Ross, born Jaculyn Bless Ross on January 30, 1946, in St. Louis, Missouri, is an R&B, soul, and pop singer known for her distinctive style reminiscent of Mary Wells. She gained fame in the early to mid-1960s, particularly for her hit song "Selfish One," which features a memorable horn riff that echoes the traditional pop standard "Tenderly." Ross made her national debut in 1964 with "Selfish One," which climbed to #11 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts. This success was followed by other singles, including "I've Got The Skill" (1964) and "Jerk And Twine" (1965), along with minor hits such as "Haste Makes Waste" (1964) and "Take Me For A Little While" (1965), penned by Trade Martin. Over the years, Ross has garnered a dedicated following, particularly in England, among fans of Northern Soul music. She is featured in the documentary "The Strange World Of Northern Soul," directed by Ian Levine, an English songwriter, producer, DJ, and record collector.
