Jake Sollo, born Nkem Okonkwo, began his musical career in the 1960s with The Hykkers, a beat group formed at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. After The Hykkers disbanded, he joined the Aba-based band Funkees. By 1976, due to creative and personal tensions, The Funkees began to disintegrate, and Sollo was presented with the opportunity to play with the renowned Afro-rock group Osibisa for a year. In the 1980s, he transitioned into a career as a producer, primarily at Tabansi/Taretone, where he worked with various artists including Felix Lebarty, Veno, and Esbee Family. He also traveled to London to record several notable solo LPs. Tragically, Jake Sollo passed away in a car accident on September 13, 1985, along Ihiala Road in Anambra State.
