Jackie Mittoo, born on March 3, 1948, in Brown's Town, St. Ann, Jamaica, was a prominent musician and a key figure in the development of reggae music. He began his professional music career at the age of thirteen, playing with various bands, including The Rivals. During this time, he frequented Federal Studios, where he collaborated with some of Jamaica's top musicians, eventually becoming associated with the Skatalites. In 1959, he became a recording artist at Federal Studios, where he caught the attention of producer Coxsone Dodd. Impressed by Mittoo's talent, Dodd appointed him to run sessions at his new studio in Kingston, which opened in 1963. Throughout the 1960s, Mittoo and Dodd recorded thousands of tracks. After the split of the original group, Dodd formed a new studio band under Mittoo's direction, with Mittoo taking on a creative leadership role, writing music, arranging recordings, and guiding session musicians. Mittoo's contributions to the music included working with numerous artists and creating exceptional instrumental pieces. His work laid the foundation for reggae music, which continues to be covered and reinterpreted. Jackie Mittoo passed away from cancer on December 16, 1990, at the age of 42. He is remembered as an ambassador of Jamaican music worldwide.
