James is an indie/alternative rock group from the UK, formed in Manchester in 1982 by founding members. The group was signed one year later to an infamous record label but was subsequently snapped up by a major label. James gained impressive underground status with their early 1980s folk/indie sound before becoming big chart toppers in the mid-to-late 1980s. Their 1989 single "Sit Down," released by a seminal indie record label, reached #2 in the UK singles charts, followed by the #2 album "Seven" in 1991. The band continued to find success with the 1993 album "Laid," its nocturnal sister album "Wah Wah" in 1994, and "Whiplash" in 1997, released just after the UK's mid-90s Britpop explosion. After releasing two additional albums, James initially split up in 2001 but reunited in 2007 and remains active as of 2024.
