James Booker was a versatile American pianist born on December 17, 1939, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He passed away on November 8, 1983, in the same city. In the 1950s, he recorded rhythm and blues music but had a much broader musical range that included pop songs, the theme from "The Godfather," and renditions of Chopin waltzes. Throughout his life, Booker struggled with drug problems, which led to several prison sentences and the loss of his left eye in 1973. It is noted that a pseudonym he used on a 1961 Dave Bartholomew album may be related to contractual issues, but further research is needed on this matter.
