James Brown and His Famous Flames were a dynamic group known for their gospel and rhythm & blues performances, initially playing at juke joints before gaining popularity at various colleges. The group originally performed under the name The Flames, with Brown as a member, prior to their first recording, "Please, Please, Please." As their fame grew, they were billed as James Brown and The Famous Flames or sometimes as James Brown and His Famous Flames. In the early days of their career, before securing a recording contract, each member played an instrument, with Bobby Byrd on piano and Brown on drums. However, as time went on, the Famous Flames became known specifically as the vocalists who backed Brown, while the instrumentalists were part of a separate band known by various names such as the James Brown Band or the James Brown Orchestra. This distinction was often blurred by their record label, King Records, which credited the vocal group on labels of singles that did not feature them. The early line-up of the group, previously known as the Dominions and serving as backing vocalists, included J.W. Archer, Bill Hollings, and Louis Madison from 1957 to 1958.
