James Brown and The Famous Flames was a dynamic group known for their gospel and rhythm & blues performances. Initially, they were simply billed as The Flames, with James Brown as a member of the ensemble. Their breakthrough came with the recording of "Please, Please, Please." As their popularity grew, they began to perform under the name James Brown and The Famous Flames, or sometimes as James Brown and His Famous Flames. In the early days, before securing a recording contract, each member of the group played an instrument, with Bobby Byrd on piano and Brown himself on drums. However, over time, The Famous Flames became primarily known as the vocal group that backed Brown, distinct from the instrumentalists who were often billed separately under various names like the James Brown Band or the James Brown Orchestra. This distinction was sometimes blurred by their record label, King Records, which credited the vocal group on labels of James Brown's singles that did not actually feature them. The early line-up of the group, which was previously known as the Dominions, included J.W. Archer, Bill Hollings, and Louis Madison, and they performed as backing vocalists from 1957 to 1958.
