James Carr was a rhythm and blues soul singer born on June 13, 1942, in Coahoma, Mississippi. He passed away on January 7, 2001, in a nursing home in Memphis, Tennessee, due to lung cancer. Coming from a Baptist preacher's family, Carr began his musical journey singing in church and performing in gospel groups. He worked on an assembly line in Memphis when he started recording in the mid-'60s for a small Memphis-based label. Carr first made the R&B charts in 1966 with "You've Got My Mind Messed Up," followed by his most famous song, "The Dark End of the Street," which was written by notable songwriters. He continued to record for the label until it closed in 1969 but struggled to achieve the same success with his subsequent releases. Throughout his life, Carr suffered from bipolar disorder, which impacted his career.
