James Cockerham is an Atlanta-based African American composer, songwriter, arranger, musician, and playwright. He began his recording career in 1970 with a single titled “Every Sign of Spring,” which he recorded with “The Superbs” at Arthur Smith Studio in Charlotte, NC. That same year, he released his first album with The Rickard’s Chapel AME Zion Choir. In 1995, he composed “New Meaning,” which was licensed to the Toni Morrison Society, and in 2020, he performed an instrumental rendition of this piece at the Atlanta Memorial Service honoring Toni Morrison's life. Cockerham received the Moondance International Film Festival Seahorse Award for Best Music for Film Score in 2013. His stage plays have been performed by notable figures including Academy Award-nominated Ruby Dee Davis and Ossie Davis, Q. Parker of the R&B group “112,” Grammy Award-winning artist PJ Morton, John Patton from the film “The Color Purple,” and Chantae Cann, who has collaborated with “Snarky Puppy,” among others.
