Janet Kay is a British reggae singer born in London. At the age of 21, her single "Silly Games" soared to No. 2 on the UK chart in the summer of 1979, becoming one of Britain's biggest reggae hits and exemplifying the tender, soulful category of Lovers Rock. During the song's rise to fame, Kay was on vacation in the Netherlands and was unaware of its success. Despite the widespread neglect of reggae by the British radio establishment during the late 1970s and early 80s, "Silly Games" stood out with its unique feature of Kay's thin voice straining to reach the ultra-high notes at the song's climax. Although it remained her only pop crossover hit, her later records, including a 1982 album produced by a leading UK reggae producer, continued to receive positive attention in the specialist market.
