Javelin is a musical duo consisting of cousins Tom Van Buskirk and George Langford, who began collaborating in Providence, RI in 2004. Their early work dates back to a shared bedroom near the shore, and they currently reside in New York. Known for their vibrant performances, Javelin utilizes colorfully painted boomboxes that create large speaker totems, or “boombaatas,” which can be suspended from ceilings or arranged on the floor. Their shows feature an FM transmitter that encourages audience participation through a Bring Your Own Boombox (B.Y.O.Boombox) concept, promoting mobile parties. Their performances have taken place in a variety of settings, from the children’s branch of the Olneyville Public Library in Rhode Island to the Museum of Modern Art in New York, both within the same week. Outside of live shows, Javelin dedicates time to producing a diverse catalog of music that reflects their eclectic influences. Their songs range from broken dance jams to relaxed instrumental cut-ups, crafted with care using MPCs. They creatively sample and reassemble long-forgotten sounds with drums, wooden recorders, old keyboards, and handmade thumb pianos, resulting in a unique mix tape fantasy that showcases a blend of R&B, amateur booty bass, and Andean flautists.
