Jawbreaker is an emo/punk rock band that originated in Los Angeles before relocating to San Francisco's Mission District in the summer of 1991. The band members—Blake Schwarzenbach (vocals/guitar), Chris Bauermeister (bass), and Adam Pfahler (drums)—initially came together at New York University in the mid-1980s. They released their first record, the "Whack & Blite" 7", in 1989 on their own Blackball Records. Over their career, they released three LPs and contributed to various compilations before signing with major label DGC at the end of 1994. Their major label debut, "Dear You," did not achieve the expected success and led to accusations of "selling out" from their punk rock fan base. This, combined with existing interpersonal tensions, resulted in the band's breakup in 1996. After the split, the members pursued other projects, with Blake forming Jets To Brazil and both Blake and Chris returning to college for various degrees. Adam revived Blackball Records to reissue Jawbreaker's out-of-print music and release records by other bands. The band reunited in 2017.
