Jean Chapel was an American rock-a-billy and country singer and songwriter, born on March 6, 1925, in Lester County, Kentucky. She was the sister of Minnie Chapel and the mother of an unnamed individual. Jean married country musician Opal in 1947, and between 1948 and 1953, they recorded prolifically under the names Mattie O’Neil and Salty Holmes or as Salty and Mattie. As a songwriter, Jean achieved notable success, charting 15 songs in the U.S., primarily on the country charts. Her song "Lonely Again," performed by Eddy Arnold, reached #1 on the U.S. Country chart in 1967. Another of her songs, "To Get to You," recorded by Jerry Wallace, peaked at #12 on the U.S. Country chart in 1972. Additionally, "Lay Some Happiness on Me," co-written with Bob Jennings and performed by Dean Martin, reached #6 on the U.S. Adult Contemporary chart in 1967. Jean Chapel passed away on August 19, 1995, in Port Orange, Florida. Her BMI IPI number is 5864978.
