Jean-Claude Risset (March 13, 1938 - November 21, 2016) was a distinguished French composer known for his orchestral, chamber, vocal, piano, and electroacoustic works, which have been performed globally. Born in Le Puy, France, he studied composition and piano, as well as mathematics and physics at the École Normale Supérieure de Paris, where he earned his Doctorat ès Sciences in 1967. Risset received honorary doctorates from the University of Edinburgh in 1994 and the Universidad de Córdoba in 2000. Throughout his career, he garnered numerous accolades, including the UFAM Prix pour Piano, the Prix du Groupement des Acousticiens de Langue française, and several prestigious prizes in electronic music competitions. He was recognized with multiple medals from the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique and received various honors such as the Grand Prix National de la Musique and the Golden NICA from Ars Electronica. Risset collaborated with notable musicians and performed his works with various soloists, including flautists, pianists, clarinettists, and sopranos. He held significant positions in the field of music and research, working at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique and IRCAM, and served as a composer-in-residence at the Media Laboratory at MIT.
