Jeanne Lee was an American vocalist, poet, composer, choreographer, and artist, born on January 29, 1939, in New York City, New York. She graduated from Bard College, focusing on child psychology, literature, and dance choreography. In the mid-1960s, she embraced a multidisciplinary approach influenced by Fluxus and composed music for California-based sound poets. Lee's first husband was Hazelton, with whom she had a daughter named Naima Hazelton. In the late 1960s, she returned to the East Coast jazz scene, performing and recording music. Lee played a significant role in the magnum opus "Escalator Over The Hill" (1971) and collaborated with various musicians. During a stay in Europe in 1967, she began a long association with vibraphonist and composer, whom she later married. With her second husband, she had two children: a son who is a dancer and a daughter who is a vocalist. Lee was a core member of her husband's ensemble and collaborated with numerous other artists throughout her career. Jeanne Lee passed away on October 25, 2000, in Tijuana, Mexico, at the age of 61.
