Jefferson Airplane is an American psychedelic rock band hailing from San Francisco, CA, that epitomized the Haight-Ashbury culture during the late 1960s. The band formed in 1965 when singer Marty Balin met guitarist Paul Kantner. Initially starting as a folk-rock group, they later expanded their lineup to include lead guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, drummer Spencer Dryden, singer Grace Slick, and bassist Jack Casady, who was soon replaced by another bassist. They were signed by RCA, and their debut album charted at #128, selling 10,000 copies in the San Francisco area. After some lineup changes, including Anderson leaving to have a baby and being replaced by Slick, and Spencer leaving to form another band, the group solidified its definitive lineup. They performed at the Woodstock and Altamont festivals but experienced another major shakeup when Dryden left in 1970 to join another band, leading to his replacement. The band stopped touring when Slick became pregnant by Kantner. Kaukonen and Casady formed a side project in 1971 but continued to be members of Jefferson Airplane. That same year, the group established its own label, which was distributed by RCA. In February 1974, Slick and Kantner officially formed the group Jefferson Starship, marking the end of the original phase of Jefferson Airplane. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 as a Performer
