JEL is a US hip-hop producer and emcee based in Oakland, LA, born on May 7, 1978. Originally from Chicago, IL, he began making hip-hop beats in 1994 and is a co-founder of a record label. He has been a member of various groups throughout his career. Primarily recognized as a producer, JEL is known for his use of the E-Mu Systems SP-1200 and Akai MPC2000XL samplers, creating drum beats by playing the drums live via the sampler pads with little or no sequencing. He has produced numerous tracks for underground hip-hop artists and also provided vocals on certain projects.
