Jelly Roll Morton, born Ferdinand Joseph LaMothe on September 20, 1885, or October 20, 1890, in New Orleans, Louisiana, was an American pianist and composer often regarded as the first true composer of jazz music, a genre he claimed to have invented. He led the Red Hot Peppers, a seven or eight-piece group, from 1926 to 1930. His birth name was changed to Morton when he was three years old after his mother remarried. During World War I, he was drafted as Ferd Joseph Morton. He passed away on July 10, 1941, in Los Angeles, California. In 1998, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an Early Influence.
