Jerry Garcia was born on August 1, 1942, in San Francisco. He was a talented musician known for his skills on the guitar, banjo, pedal steel guitar, and vocals. Garcia's first paid performances occurred in 1961 at the age of 18 in Palo Alto. He played in a series of bands in the San Francisco area until December 1965, when he joined a group that performed at the first of the Acid Tests. Jerry Garcia passed away on August 9, 1995, from a heart attack in Lagunitas-Forest Knolls. Bob Dylan once remarked, "There's no way to measure his greatness or magnitude as a person or a player."
