Jerry Gonzalez was an American jazz trumpeter, flugelhornist, and percussionist, born on June 5, 1949, in New York City, New York. He was known for his collaborations with prominent jazz figures such as Dizzy Gillespie, Jaco Pastorius, McCoy Tyner, Kenny Dorham, and Eddie Palmieri, particularly in the group "El Son." He also worked with Manny Oquendo's Conjunto Libre and led his own groups, including "Jerry Gonzalez & the Fort Apache." Throughout his career, Jerry recorded and performed with many notable jazz artists, including Tony Williams, Anthony Braxton, Tito Rodriguez, Ray Barretto, Tito Puente, Paquito D'Rivera, and Machito. Tragically, he passed away at the Hospital Clínico in Madrid due to smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in his apartment in the Lavapiés neighborhood on October 1, 2018.
