Jesse Kalima was born on October 31, 1920, in Honolulu, during the time when Hawai'i was still a territory. He gained recognition at the young age of 15 by winning an amateur ukulele championship with his performance of "Stars And Stripes Forever." Throughout his career, he formed musical groups with his brothers and participated in the Hawai'i Calls radio show during the 1940s and 1950s, continuing until Hawai'i achieved statehood in 1959. Kalima remained active in music for most of his life, often including his sons, Dana and Jesse Jr., in his performances. He passed away on July 13, 1980, at the age of 59. In 2005, he was honored with a Nā Hōkū Hanohano Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hawaiʻi Academy of Recording Arts.
