Jesus Loves You is an alias used by Boy George during the late '80s, as he sought to revitalize his solo career after struggling with heroin addiction. Under this name, he released increasingly dance-oriented tracks through his Virgin-funded imprint, creatively naming himself for the writer's credit. His 1990 album, The Martyr Mantras, marked a significant comeback, featuring his first UK top-40 hit since 1987, "Bow Down Mister," which was originally intended for a Culture Club reunion. In many regions, the album and its singles were marketed as Boy George solo releases, with no reference to the Jesus Loves You name. A second album, Popularity Breeds Contempt, was planned for release in late 1992, but its lead single, "Sweet Toxic Love," failed to chart, leading to the album's cancellation. In 1995, Boy George returned to his original moniker and shifted his musical focus away from dance music.
