Jim and Jesse McReynolds, natives of Carfax, Virginia, began their musical journey on the old radio circuit, performing at various stations across the South and Midwest, including WPFB in Middletown. In 1951, they were billed as Jesse and James, the McReynolds Brothers at WPFB. They backed Smokey Ward on his Barrelhead Gang record and recorded ten sides for Kentucky Records in Cincinnati as the Virginia Trio, alongside Larry Roll. Jim played guitar while Jesse showcased a cross-picking mandolin style that influenced many other mandolin players. Their long career included recording for major labels, becoming members of the Grand Ole Opry in 1964, receiving a National Heritage Fellowship Award from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1997, and being inducted into the IBMA Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 1993.
