Jimmy C. Newman, born on August 29, 1927, in Mamou, Louisiana, was an American Cajun-country singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He spent most of his career in Nashville, Tennessee, driven by his passion for country music. Although he played in a Cajun band as a teenager, his early solo work featured minimal Cajun influences. It wasn't until the 1960s that he began to incorporate these elements into his music, notably with the recording of "Alligator Man," which became his theme song at the Grand Ole Opry. In the late 1970s, as his commercial popularity waned, he returned to Cajun music and formed a band. In 1991, this band earned a Grammy Award nomination for their album. Jimmy C. Newman passed away on June 21, 2014, in Nashville, Tennessee.
