James "Jimmy" Gray (1937-1999) was an influential American jazz disc jockey, publisher, record producer, and label owner from Washington, D.C. He was most recognized for his work as a jazz disc jockey on various radio stations, including WGTB, WHUR, and WPFW, from the mid-1960s to the mid-1990s. In the mid-1970s, he founded a jazz record label and produced records for it until his passing. Throughout his career, Gray collaborated with artists and groups such as Experience Unlimited and Plunky and the rest of the unnamed groups. He also served as a national promotional director for an independent record promoter and worked as a concert promoter, organizing events for notable artists. Additionally, he published a magazine called Black Fire, which featured articles on jazz musicians and advertisements from other jazz labels. A native of Washington, D.C., Gray graduated from Dunbar High School and was a Navy veteran. He passed away on August 25, 1999, at his home in Washington, D.C., due to a heart attack at the age of 62.
