Jimmy Gray Hall was a US singer and songwriter born on December 28, 1948, in Nashville, Tennessee. He was raised in a Southern Baptist family, with his father being a big-band trumpet player who nurtured his musical interests. The family later moved to Pasadena, California, in the 1950s, where Hall's passion for music flourished. Hall was the lead singer of the band Thumper and created several promotional singles for A&M Records, Epic, and CBS. He released one solo LP titled “Possessed by the Moon” on CBS Records, which was produced at the renowned Muscle Shoals Sound Studio. The album was produced by CBS Records President Stephen Paley and Eddie Hinton, a member of the Muscle Shoals Sound Section. Hall's music drew influences from soul, funk, rock, and bluegrass. Upon its release, Billboard Magazine described it as a “promising debut” and highlighted Hall as “a musician to watch in the years to come.” The title track featured Hall playing multiple instruments, while the best-known song from the album, released in 1974, became associated with the “blue-eyed soul” movement of the 1970s. Other notable tracks included the biographical song “Two Sons,” which reflected on Hall's family and hinted at future troubles.
