Jimmy Gresham, born James H. Gresham on October 14, 1934, in Selma, Alabama, is a notable soul singer and songwriter. He has 14 songs credited to him by BMI and was active in writing and producing records in Los Angeles during the 1960s. Gresham played in Rosey Grier's band and also wrote and produced records for Grier's record label, "Tac-Ful." Throughout his career, he has shared the stage with renowned artists such as Wilson Pickett and Joe Tex. Gresham is the brother of several siblings. His life took a significant turn when, as of October 2008, he was in his 16th year of incarceration in a United States Federal Prison, serving a 30-year sentence without the possibility of parole. He was convicted for his involvement with a group of Marielitos, who were sponsored into his neighborhood by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) following the Mariel Boat Lift. Despite being a first-time, non-violent offender, he received the lengthy sentence in the same courthouse where he took the Navy oath at the age of 18. Jimmy Gresham was released from prison on February 21, 2012.
