James Nunya, born James Smith on December 7, 1944, in Foxboro, North Carolina, passed away on September 26, 2012, in Los Angeles, California. A young man with a passion for music, he enlisted in the US Navy and served aboard the USS Forrestal during the Vietnam Conflict. Throughout his career, James was associated with notable record labels such as MCA, Motown, and Def Jam, and he also established his own label. In his later years, he worked as a general agent with Golden State Mutual Life. Activism played a significant role in his life, particularly in the last 25 years, where he was a strong advocate for preserving the integrity of Echo Park's Semi-Tropic Spiritualist Tract. He was the father of an individual known by the alias Jimmy Nunya.
