Jimmy Smith was an American jazz keyboardist, born on December 8, 1928, in Norristown, Philadelphia, USA. He passed away on February 8, 2005, in Scottsdale, Arizona, at the age of 76. Smith was best known for his performances on the Hammond B-3 electric organ, which significantly contributed to the instrument's popularity. In recognition of his contributions to jazz, he was awarded the NEA Jazz Masters Award from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2005, the highest honor a US jazz musician can receive.
