J.J. Barnes was an American R&B/Soul singer and songwriter, born on November 30, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan. He was the brother of another artist and achieved his biggest hit in the US with "Baby Please Come Back Home," which reached #9 on the US Billboard R&B chart in 1967. On the recommendation of a friend and groupmate, Barnes moved to England in the 1970s, where he gained popularity. His friend arranged for him to appear on a series of shows, leading to a record deal. Barnes became a favorite in the UK Northern soul scene and performed frequently in the UK. Although he never achieved major notoriety again after the 1980s, he continued to perform until his passing on December 10, 2022.
