J.J. Cale was an American singer-songwriter, musician, and influential guitar stylist born on December 5, 1938, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He passed away from a heart attack on July 26, 2013, at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, California. Known for his aversion to celebrity, Cale's impact on music has been recognized by notable artists such as Mark Knopfler, Neil Young, and Eric Clapton, who referred to him as “one of the most important artists in the history of rock.” He is regarded as one of the originators of the Tulsa Sound, a genre that blends blues, rockabilly, country, and jazz. In the late 1960s, he also worked as a recording engineer.
