J.J. Lancaster, whose real name is Sjon Ueckert, is a musician known for his time in Manhattan during the late 1960s. He lived on the island for about two years from 1967 to 1969, during which he played with the Pleasant Street Blues Band and recorded his first single for Date Records, a label associated with Columbia Records. His producer was Chuck Sagel, known for producing Frank Sinatra. Lancaster's band opened for the Electric Circus, a club owned by Andy Warhol, located on St. Mark's Place in the Village, before moving on to perform at Trudy Heller's Uptown Cabaret, where Nico and the Velvet Underground later took their place. During this period, he resided in the Albert Hotel, a popular lodging for working musicians that featured basement rehearsal rooms. Reflecting on his experiences, Lancaster noted that New York was a vibrant place at that time, but upon returning years later, he found it to be more uptight and angry. He expressed a desire to return once more to see if the atmosphere had changed.
