Joan Armatrading is a British singer, songwriter, and guitarist, born on December 9, 1950, in Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis. She moved with her family to Birmingham, England, in 1957 and later relocated to London in the early 1970s to perform in a repertory production of "Hair." Throughout her career, Armatrading has been nominated twice for a Brit Award as Best Female Vocalist and received an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contemporary Song Collection in 1996. She has also been nominated three times for a Grammy Award, notably being the first UK female artist nominated in the Grammy Blues category for her 2007 album "Into The Blues." In recognition of her contributions to music, she was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2001. In 2008, Armatrading was part of Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors" Tour. She owns a purpose-built recording facility on her property in Surrey, where she has recorded most of her albums. On May 2, 2011, she and her girlfriend entered a civil partnership in the Shetland Isles.
