Joanna Brouk (1949–2017) was an American electronic composer and pioneer in ambient and new age music. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, she earned a B.A. in Creative Writing and Electronic Music from the University of California, Berkeley, and an M.A. in Electronic Music from Mills College, studying under Robert Ashley and Terry Riley. Brouk's work, characterized by its minimalist and meditative qualities, often incorporated synthesizers, field recordings, and the human voice. She self-released several cassettes in the 1980s, including "Healing Music" and "Sounds of the Sea." In 2016, The Numero Group released "Hearing Music," a compilation of her recordings, bringing renewed attention to her contributions to electronic music.
