Joanna Brouk, born in 1949 in St. Louis County, Missouri, was an American composer and poet who became a pioneer of early electronic music. She passed away on May 6, 2017. Brouk's little-known body of work exists at the intersection of ambient, new age, drone, and classical minimalism. She studied under notable figures at the Mills College Center for Contemporary Music before making her mark in the 1970s Bay Area new music scene. Brouk created uncompromising electronic and acoustic works, describing herself as less a composer than a channel, drawing inspiration from the frequencies of the natural world and collaborating with talents like Maggi Payne and Bill Maraldo.
